MAHÉ BOISSEL
respirar, dibujar, vivir

Breathe, Draw, Live

This compilation of drawings of Mahe BOISSEL is the result of six years of work. Here are some of her most relevant pieces.

For her paintings she uses oil, charcoal and pastel and her works are all very similar in size (160x130cm).

In her compilation “Breathe, Draw, Live”, the artist uses the grammar of shapes. There is an absence of details, her characters are naked both literally and in the figurative sense: there is no reference to their condition, their time or their habits.

-The staging of her works has a theatrical structure but a cinematic focus, it lacks detail and background.

-The different frames are presented in the same setting and often appear incoherent in a dream-like way.

-The central space is empty, as if it were evoking its own potential. This emptiness calls to be filled. The drawings have their own breathing pattern.

Mahe Boissel confronts characters that exist in reality and wonders: What are your rituals? What is your personal mythology? How do you manage to survive in this world?

She stays true to her characters and rescues the light from their live flesh. Her thick lines are as precise as surgical knifes.

Her creatures are sexless, ageless, somewhere between what is new and what is old. They dance, shout, love, sing, caress but above all, they focus on their own humanity while desire drifts around them.

Mahe Boissel’s drawings lack the light of an angel, the charm of a muse’s spell, the kind of spell that emerges from the bottom of the self when it hears the sound of feet tapping to music. Her drawings arise from deep inside the body like black blood, they twinkle in blue light. This combination burns the body, breaks the style and pierces the soul.

Of Catalan descent, Mahe Boissel has light eyes and dark gaze. Her drawings are neither beautiful nor politically relevant, but they are true and truth, as Louis Soutter says, is tremendous.

Her trace is continuous, she makes her way unconcerned. She is profound and leaves us breathless with her fleshy creatures, which blow up all expectation, they are fascinating and remind us that Mahe Boissel is magical.
