On the Various Nature of Things

This film serves as something of a primer on Stratman’s work, blending amateur scientific curiosity with a wide-eyed appreciation of the man-made spectacles that complement the natural world’s dark beauty. Stratman is, to be sure, one of what the physicist Michael Faraday (protagonist of the film) calls the “few inquiring minds who seek to uncover what is wonderful in this world.” SAMUEL LA FRANCE

DEBORAH STRATMAN

In It Will Die Out In The Mind (2006), quotes from Tarkovsky’s Stalker (1979) reinforce just how boring the real world is, the on-screen text imploring us to give up the mysteries of telepathy, ghosts, flying saucers, and the Bermuda triangle in favour of the “cast-iron laws” that govern our existence.

The filmmaker offers us a lyrical ghost story in The Magician’s House (2007), one that’s as much about losing a beloved friend as it is about losing a beloved medium (the then-vanishing celluloid, which a decade later persists in its Lazarus-like rise from a much-publicized demise).

In …These Blazeing Starrs! the viewer is encouraged to consider how we’ve interpreted cosmic intrusions into our world over the centuries, from the comets bursting out of the heavens to the unnaturally imposed “immutable forms” that hover between the observer and Grecian landscapes in Xenoi (2016), Stratman’s newest work.
