“Reiterations of Dissent” concerns the suppressed history and fragmented memories of the Jeju April Third Uprising and Massacre of 1948. The events took place shortly before the outbreak of the Korean War on the filmmaker´s birthplace, Jeju Island, South Korea. The Jeju Islanders resisted foreign intervention and rejected the May 10 election for a separate South Korean Nation. As a result, they were labeled as communists and in a ‘red hunt’ the South Korean military and police, under supreme command of the United States Military Government in Korea, committed genocide onto large parts of the civilian island population. For more than five decades, it was prohibited to talk openly about the event. In the revised 2014 single-channel version of Reiterations of Dissent, six different video narratives – Ghosts, Jeju Airport Massacre, Lamentation of the Dead, The Politics of Naming, Retake: Mayday and History of Endless Rebellion – uncover various underlying political motivations and portray how the un-reconciled trauma of Jeju 4.3 keep resonating in the present landscape of Jeju Island, in literature, in the memories of survivors and relatives, in shamanic rituals mediating between the living and the dead and in protests against the ongoing construction of the Jeju Naval Base. Using different modes of audiovisual registers and editing techniques, Reiterations of Dissent explores a new language for documentary filmmaking and challenges our relationship with text, image and narrative. Each video narrative shows a different aspect, a different attempt at approaching the Jeju April Third Massacre as an unstable episode of modern history by presenting a multi-layered archive of experiences, events and perspectives.

Jane Jin Kaisen:

ane Jin Kaisen is a visual artist and filmmaker born in South Korea in 1980 and based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She received her visual art education from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, The University of California Los Angeles and The Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program. Jane Jin Kaisen is invested in transnational political histories that are unresolved and that continue to haunt the present moment. By creating multi-layered narratives that connect past, present and future, she destabilizes dominant notions of memory, history and identity and point to alternative genealogies and subject-formations. She often merges different stylistic modes and juxtaposes poetic, performative and semi-fictional forms of storytelling with testimonies, archival imagery, and documentary to allow for disparate forms of affect and knowledge to surface. Jane Jin Kaisen directed a number of narrative experimental films, among others the widely recognized The Woman, The Orphan, and The Tiger, which she made in collaboration with Guston Sondin-Kung in 2010. The film tells the story of three generations of women in Korea; the former ‘comfort’ women, women employed around US military bases and international adoptees, whom in different ways have been effected by legacies of war, militarism, patriarchy and foreign intervention. She also works as a video artist and shows her video installations and short videos in art museums and galleries. In 2011, her video installation Reiterations of Dissent about the suppressed history and fragmented memories of the Jeju April Third Uprising and Massacre was awarded the distinguished Montana Enterprize at Kunsthallen Brandts (DK) by jury Chus Martinez, Dirk Luckow, and Åsa Nacking.
